Miss Millennia Magazine LLC,
RE: Your ad for a Women’s Magazine Publishing Assistant, Internship.com, 01/07/13
Dear Hiring Manager,
You need an intern with meticulous attention to detail and excellent editing skills. My experience with online media, formal grammar structure, and status as a Writing Arts student in my junior year make me an ideal candidate for the publishing assistant position at Miss Millennia Magazine LLC
My three years as a communications major have given me a solid foundation for this internship. I am comfortable performing a wide range of job tasks, such as writing articles, editing, contributing, and creating. I am eager to contribute my enthusiasm and skills to Miss Millennia Magazine LLC and to grow in this area. I have trained and studied to pursue the position as publishing assistant. Beyond enthusiasm and dedication, I also have a background in journalism, creative writing, and working with online media such as Twitter, Facebook, Wordpress, and more to gather and dispense information as effectively as possible.
I’d be happy to provide greater detail about my skills and experience during an interview. Please contact me if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Jessica O’Shea

Reflective Statement
The most information was provided during the Professions in Writing Arts course. Within that course, I received information on what jobs and careers my major qualified me for, what graduate programs were out there, and where to look for internships. More than just providing this information or simply telling the students about it, the course required and aiding in real-world applications. I was able to rework and have my resume evaluated, which has aided in my securing an internship as a writer for an online newspaper. All types of graduate programs were explained and I was able to write my statement of purpose with information and guidance, which was vital for my ability to complete my graduate application in time for submission.
I also learned about my options by utilizing the resource that was my professors and their experiences. My professors have always been eager to share stories of how they found work, what succeeded, what didn’t, and were willing to look at my personal future plans to offer constructive ideas and changes. Through them I was able to understand what track in the Writing Arts that I wished to most follow and how graduate school is always an option, especially because it did not have to be the expense that I always believed it was.
The WA program has also prepared me for these various field of work. It did this through the variety of classes available and required. I have gained direct experience in journalism, all types of creative writing, magazine article writing, and a deep understanding of web content generation. More than that, the program has allowed me to learn about the psychology and process of creation through classes such as Writer’s Mind and general education requirements like Psychology and Sociology.
An important aspect of this program was how it taught me how to market myself to potential employers. I can say that I am not simply a writer, nor that I have an understanding literature, but that I understand communication. Because of this distinguishing factor, I can assure possible job’s that I have the ability to apply my skills in a variety of contexts, but I am also equipped to learn new skills rapidly and with a deeper understanding due to my basis of learning.

Statement of Purpose
My heroes were not the contestants of American Idol or the Spice Girls, but authors of fantasy, fiction, journalism, and poetry. Tamora Pierce, Jack London, Sir Arthur Doyle, and E.E. Cummings, these were and are the people I set my standards to. With trials and errors, teachers, and new experiences, they gained the tools needed to fulfill their goals. Writing a novel, working as an editor, and writing articles to inform and entertain are my goals, and I am determined to work hard for the skills I need to achieve them.
My time as an undergraduate at Rowan University has given me the tools to work towards joining the ranks of my heroes, while at the same time introducing me to new interests and avenues of exploration. Having taken everything from film studies, to fiction, poetry, and non-fiction writing, to working with social media and journalistic content, I realize that it has come to the point where I need a more specific structure to my education, which I feel the Creative Writing/Journalism focused program provides. I want to learn more concretely about high level writing, get deeper into the process of editing and reediting, to work with peers in a productive and constructive environment, and to gather from mentors and professors their best and worst in experience. I have found parts of this in other extracurricular groups, such as being a part of a writer’s group that met weekly at the local Barnes and Nobel, a gathering of student writers who wanted a community to share and grow ideas with. Through that group, I better learned the delicacy and respect that must be shown to other creative minds, which I can bring with me into the classroom when working with classmates or workshop groups.
While volunteering at the Rowan Writing Center, I got a taste of the rewards in editing, of working with others to craft works through kind and constructive criticism, and in the process teaching others how to take as much care with the written word as I do. Through helping others, I saw new techniques, heard new voices, and came to appreciate individual style. I take all of this into my lessons in journalism, and apply them now in my position as an editorial writer for Toonari Post, an online news-based site. I am one of their new junior interns and plan to work towards becoming a member of their editing staff.
I feel that the workshop-focused aspect of this graduate program is the type of structure I would both best benefit from as well as find the most success in. The professors involved are both devoted to their areas of study as well able to convey all they can in a useful and viable way to their students, that I know with their aid and guidance, as well as my own drive, that I can be a competent and contributing member of the program both now and in the future.
